Mu Ko Similan National Park is open from 15 October to 15 May and closed the rest of the year. The number of visitors per day is capped, so book early.

The drive from your hotel to Thap Lamu pier in Phang Nga province takes about two hours, then it is a little over an hour by speedboat. The first snorkel is at Koh Bangu (island 9). On Koh Similan (island 8) we climb over the boulders to Sail Rock, which looks down on Donald Duck Bay. Lunch is on Koh Miang (island 4), with time on the beach and a second snorkel.

It is a long day, with about six hours of travelling, and the open sea can be choppy. It suits confident swimmers who are comfortable with a mask. Bring seasickness tablets, sunscreen without oxybenzone and a rash guard.

Highlights

  • Climb to Sail Rock above Donald Duck Bay
  • Two snorkel stops: Koh Bangu and Koh Miang
  • Private boat, no shared groups
  • Seasonal: 15 October to 15 May only
